RV Tips: What to Pack on a Cold-Weather Camping Trip

Cold-weather travel season is here – what are you packing? Let us help you find a good middle ground between “every single thing I own” and “all of my summer camping gear.” Neither of those are good options nor will serve your needs well. Cool weather camping means different gear than summer camping, but you also don’t have to go overboard. Take a look at our RV tips for what to pack on a cold-weather camping trip below!

Socks, Socks, Layers of Everything Else, and More Socks

We really mean it. Plan on at least 2 pairs of socks a day, plus a couple extra pairs sprinkled into your duffel bag for good measure. If your feet can get wet or cold outside…they probably will. Coming back to warm, dry socks will feel like a luxury.

Other things to pack:

  • Moisture wicking base layers
  • Lightweight middle layers – long sleeve t-shirts, etc.
  • Wind/weather resistant jacket (like fleece)
  • Hats and warm gloves
  • Rain gear (it’s going to rain.)

Extra Fuel

Keeping things warm and heating up food takes a bit longer in cold weather. Pack extra fuel – you won’t regret it!

Easy Recipes

Keep your meals easy to plan and easy to make! I personally turn toward one-pot wonders, where all ingredients can be thrown in together in a soup pot, Instant Pot, or slow cooker. It makes clean up super easy, and there’s just something cozy about a meal you can eat in a bowl and with a spoon. Keep your meal plans minimal and easy. You’ll be glad you did!

Severe Weather Preparedness Kit

Sometimes inclement weather rushes in without much warning. Staying prepared can provide you with some peace of mind! Pack a weather kit that includes the following:

  • Headlamps, flashlights, and extra batteries
  • NOAA weather radio
  • Ponchos
  • First aid kit
  • Duct tape

Pack it all in a waterproof tub, and you’re good to go!
